Key Information for Applicants – Scientific Software Research Faculty (SSRF) Award Program Purpose: The SSRF Award supports early-career faculty focused on developing and maintaining broadly applicable scientific software in mathematics, astronomy, or theoretical physics. The goal is to create long-term, faculty-level career paths for scientific software leaders within academic departments. Who Can Apply: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in mathematics, astronomy, or theoretical physics and have demonstrated leadership in scientific software. There are no citizenship restrictions. Simons Foundation and Flatiron Institute employees are not eligible. Position Requirements: Awardees must be hired into a new, non–term-limited faculty-level role (e.g., clinical professor or professor of practice) at a U.S. Ph.D.-granting institution. Up to 50% of time may be devoted to teaching or departmental service, and awardees must have PI status. Funding Details: The award provides five years of salary support (100% for years 1–2; 50% for years 3–5, with host institutions covering the remainder), plus a $50,000 annual research allowance (up to $250,000 total). Summer salary is not allowed. Number of Awards: Up to six fellows will be funded. Application Process & Deadlines: Applications are submitted in two stages. Letters of Intent are due January 21, 2026. Selected applicants must secure an eligible faculty position and start by September 1, 2027. Additional Obligations: Awardees are expected to attend an annual meeting hosted by the Simons Foundation.
