Clinical Pharmacist – Surgery Team

Michigan Medicine is seeking a Clinical Pharmacist – Surgery Team to join its nationally recognised Department of Pharmacy Services at the University of Michigan. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to work within a world-class academic medical center delivering advanced, patient-centred care to a highly complex surgical population.

As a Surgery Clinical Pharmacist Generalist, the postholder will serve as an integral member of multidisciplinary surgical teams, collaborating closely with physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. The role focuses on ensuring the safe, effective, and cost-efficient use of medications while contributing to quality improvement, education, and clinical innovation.

Key responsibilities and expectations include:

  • Providing direct clinical pharmacy services across multiple surgical specialties, including urology, plastics, orthopedics, oral maxillofacial, otolaryngology, general surgery, and thoracic surgery.
  • Participating in daily interdisciplinary rounds to design, implement, and monitor patient-specific pharmacotherapy plans.
  • Reviewing and verifying medication orders with a focus on safety, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Performing pharmacokinetic monitoring, anticoagulation dosing, renal dosing adjustments, and parenteral nutrition monitoring.
  • Providing discharge counseling and patient education as needed.
  • Responding to Code Blue events on a rotating basis.
  • Rotating through operational pharmacy areas such as central pharmacy, operating room pharmacy, and cleanroom services.
  • Leading or contributing to guideline development, drug-use evaluations, cost-reduction initiatives, and quality improvement projects.
  • Serving as a preceptor for pharmacy students (IPPE and APPE) and mentoring pharmacy residents, with eligibility for adjunct faculty status at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy.

Required qualifications include:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an ACPE-accredited institution.
  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency or equivalent clinical experience.
  • Active or eligible licensure as a registered pharmacist in the State of Michigan.
  • Eligibility for Michigan Controlled Substance licensure.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and clinical decision-making skills.
