Electrocardiograph Technician

The Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician plays a vital role in supporting cardiovascular diagnosis and treatment by performing high-quality electrocardiographic testing for both inpatient and outpatient populations. This position directly contributes to patient safety, clinical efficiency, and the delivery of exceptional cardiac care.

Key responsibilities and duties include:

  • Operating electrocardiograph (EKG) equipment to record electrical activity of the heart for diagnostic and treatment purposes.

  • Preparing patients for testing by explaining procedures, ensuring proper positioning, and gathering relevant patient data.

  • Recording, reviewing, and processing EKG tracings to ensure accuracy and clarity, and identifying gross abnormalities requiring physician attention.

  • Assisting with preparation of EKG interpretations and clinical reports.

  • Responding to cardiac arrest calls and providing electrocardiographic data to emergency response teams.

  • Applying, educating patients on, and managing Holter and event monitors (24-hour, 48-hour, and up to 30-day recordings), including uploading and processing data.

  • Processing patient care orders through electronic systems as required.

  • Participating in in-service education related to cardiology and EKG interpretation.

  • Maintaining equipment cleanliness, replenishing supplies, and reporting equipment malfunctions.

  • Supporting EKG data storage, filing, and retrieval activities.

Required qualifications:

  • High school diploma with coursework in physical or biological sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Prior experience as an EKG Technician, including Holter monitoring and treadmill testing.

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as standing, walking, lifting, positioning, pushing, and transferring patients.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Certification from a recognized cardiac credentialing organization.

  • Experience in EKG interpretation and exposure to Holter and event monitoring services.

  • Proficiency with clinical and computer systems such as MIChart, MUSE, Word, and Excel.

  • Current BLS certification and demonstrated commitment to Patient and Family Centered Care (PFCC).
