Head Distribution Electrician

Texas State University is hiring a Head Distribution Electrician to lead electrical maintenance and operations across the university’s medium-voltage power distribution network. This position plays a vital role in ensuring safe, reliable, and continuous electrical service to campus facilities—including academic buildings, research labs, student housing, and thermal plant infrastructure—supporting the institution’s teaching, research, and residential operations.

The Head Distribution Electrician is responsible for the operation, troubleshooting, and upkeep of 601V to 25kV distribution systems, including switchgear, transformers, feeders, and plant electrical equipment. The role involves executing preventive maintenance schedules, maintaining distribution schematics and digital documentation, and responding to planned and unplanned outages. The position requires strong hands-on capability paired with analytical and documentation skills to maintain system reliability and compliance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Performing maintenance, repair, and operation of medium-voltage electrical systems
  • Maintaining thermal plant electrical equipment and components
  • Operating industrial HMI interfaces and digital relays associated with service entrance switchgear
  • Reviewing reports, system data, test documentation, and outage records
  • Ensuring electrical safety practices and hazard awareness in all work environments
  • Keeping electrical one-line diagrams accurate and up to date
  • Leading preventive maintenance efforts and assisting with troubleshooting and system upgrades

Candidates must hold a current Texas Journeyman Electrician License and demonstrate experience with distribution systems, electrical safety, and system documentation. Preferred experience includes troubleshooting VFDs, conduit installation, and wire terminations.

This role requires clear communication, teamwork, and the ability to independently resolve technical issues. The selected candidate will participate in an on-call rotation and may work extended hours for emergencies, campus events, or critical repairs.
