The Orthopedic Technician plays a key clinical support role in orthopedic clinics and emergency settings, assisting physicians in fracture management, cast application, and patient education. This position directly contributes to patient recovery, safety, and the efficient operation of orthopedic services.
Key responsibilities and expectations include:

Applying simple casts and assisting physicians with complex cast applications using various materials.

Preparing patients for fracture reduction procedures and assisting through the operation of appropriate equipment.

Assisting in the treatment of sterile and infected wounds, including cleansing, dressing, and monitoring of open or draining wounds.

Removing casts and preparing patients for recasting by inspecting, assessing, and cleansing skin.

Educating patients on cast care, crutch use, mobility limitations, and appropriate activities during recovery.

Participating in the placement and removal of orthopedic pins as directed by physicians.

Assessing patient circulation, comfort, and progress following cast application.

Supervising daily cast room operations, including scheduling, cleanliness, and workflow coordination.

Assisting with emergency room orthopedic cases involving casts and fracture stabilization.

Participating in evaluation of new casting materials, techniques, and clinical practices.

Supporting resident education through instruction in cast application and care.

Providing telephone triage to patients and responding to care-related questions.

Maintaining a clean, organized cast room and ensuring equipment and supplies are stocked and functional.

Processing patient care orders through electronic systems and obtaining insurance authorizations when required.
Required qualifications:

High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Progressively responsible experience in cast application and wound treatment.

Strong working knowledge of casting materials and orthopedic procedures.
Preferred qualifications:

Experience in clinic operations and emergency orthopedic services.
Work environment and conditions:

Union-represented position under the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP).

Work mode determined by departmental needs; primarily onsite.
