Key Responsibilities & Important Points for Applicants

  • Patient Observation & Monitoring
    • Obtain and record vital signs, oxygen saturation, pain scores, intake/output, and other unit-specific measurements.
    • Observe patient condition, respond to alarms, and promptly report abnormal findings to the RN.
    • Assist with physiologic monitoring, ECG electrode placement, and patient transport monitoring.
  • Direct Patient Care & Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
    • Assist patients with bathing, oral care, toileting, feeding, mobility, positioning, and range-of-motion exercises.
    • Escort and transport patients safely within the hospital.
    • Provide comfort, safety rounds, and sitter support as needed.
  • Specimen Collection & Clinical Support
    • Collect blood, urine, stool, sputum, and swab specimens following protocol.
    • Perform point-of-care testing and finger/heel stick blood collection.
    • Assist physicians and nurses during diagnostic and bedside procedures.
  • IVs, Tubes & Catheters
    • Discontinue peripheral IVs, remove dressings, and prime IV tubing per policy.
    • Assist with tube feedings after RN verification of placement.
    • Perform urinary catheter care, bladder scanning, enemas (non-medicated), and related tasks.
  • Wound, Respiratory & Specialized Care
    • Clean and redress wounds, assist with complex dressing changes, and manage ostomy and drainage devices.
    • Assist with tracheostomy care, suctioning, incentive spirometry, chest tube monitoring, and basic respiratory support under RN direction.
  • Environment & Equipment
    • Prepare patient rooms, make beds, stock supplies, clean equipment, and maintain unit orderliness.
    • Assist with instrument cleaning, sterilization, and emergency equipment checks.
    • Perform clerical duties and documentation as required.
  • Required Qualifications
    • High school diploma or GED and one of the following:
      • 6 months experience in skilled long-term care or acute care hospital
      • Enrollment in a nursing program with completion of fundamentals
      • 1 year experience in short-term care/rehab
      • Completion of a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) program
    • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, positioning patients, and prolonged standing.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • CNA or Certified Medical Assistant training, allied health coursework, and basic computer skills.
  • Schedule & Employment Details
    • 36 hours/week, night shifts, 12-hour shifts.
    • Onsite position in Neurology/Neurosurgery/Stroke inpatient units.
    • Union-represented role under SEIU, with wages and benefits defined by the collective bargaining agreement.
