Patient Transporter (TEMP)

This position supports Michigan Medicine’s mission by ensuring safe, timely, and professional transportation of patients throughout the medical complex. Transportation staff play a critical frontline role in patient experience, safety, and operational efficiency across clinical units.

Key responsibilities and expectations include:

  • Arriving promptly with the appropriate transport equipment (stretcher or wheelchair) as specified in transport requests.

  • Reporting to nursing stations to retrieve patient charts or transport cards before patient contact.

  • Greeting patients respectfully by name and verifying identity using patient armbands.

  • Introducing oneself appropriately to patients, families, and nursing staff.

  • Assisting patients and/or nursing staff with safe physical transfers onto transport vehicles.

  • Transporting patients efficiently to scheduled appointments, procedures, or destinations within the facility.

  • Transporting deceased patients to the Morgue with professionalism, dignity, and adherence to hospital protocols.

  • Maintaining patient safety, comfort, and confidentiality at all times.

Required qualifications:

  • High school diploma, GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

  • Physical capability to perform demanding tasks including pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching, and prolonged walking.

  • Willingness to work flexible schedules, including day, afternoon, midnight shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Work environment and conditions:

  • This role is fully on-site and does not qualify for remote or hybrid work.

  • Work schedules and assignments may change based on departmental needs.

  • Background screening and pre-employment drug testing are required in compliance with federal regulations and institutional policy.
