PhD Candidate in magnetohydrodynamic modeling of electric arcs in silicon furnaces

Trondheim, Norway
Closes in 25 days (Apr 6, 2026)

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology invites applications for a PhD Candidate in Mathematical Modeling of Electric Arcs for Silicon Production. The research will focus on advanced computational modeling of alternating-current electric arcs in submerged-arc furnaces used for silicon smelting. Using the open-source CFD platform OpenFOAM, the project will analyze arc dynamics and improve understanding of furnace operation to enhance stability and reduce energy consumption. The position is part of the SAPPHIRE project aimed at improving energy efficiency and decarbonization in metal production.
