his is a full-time PhD position (4-year contract) within the Human Centred Design (HCD) chair at the Faculty of Engineering Technology (ET), offered by the University of Twente. The research focuses on environmental decision support systems, especially simulation games and geospatial digital twins, which combine rich real-world environmental data with simulation models to create immersive, data-driven interfaces. The PhD will explore how high-fidelity simulation systems help or hinder groups of stakeholders to grasp cause-effect relationships and complexity in environmental systems, and will design and evaluate interactive and visualization techniques to improve how people use and interpret detailed, high-resolution simulation information. This includes leveraging gaming technologies, mixed reality, and tangible interaction approaches to support decision-making in multi-stakeholder contexts. The research is part of the NWO-funded NO REGRETS programme, which studies the ecological and socio-economic impacts of large offshore wind farms in the North Sea, aiming to support marine spatial planning through co-creation with stakeholders.
