PhD Position – REFOAM: Cellulosic Foam Insulation Panels from Paper and Board Recycling Fibrous Waste

Grenoble, France
Closing Date: Not specified

This is a full-time PhD position (36 months) funded under the PhD@Tec21 programme (Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND). The project aims to develop bio-based insulation panels from recycled paper and board fibrous waste using a liquid foam forming process to create high-porosity, sustainable thermal insulation materials. Current industrial insulations are largely non-renewable and difficult to recycle, so this research focuses on an eco-friendly alternative with competitive performance. The PhD research will be conducted within two leading laboratories on the Grenoble campus: the Laboratory of Process Engineering for Biorefinery, Bio-based Materials and Functional Printing (LGP2) and the Soils, Solids, Structures, Risks Laboratory (3SR), combining expertise in lignocellulosic materials, foam formation, characterization, and multiscale modelling. You will investigate foaming parameters, drainage and drying strategies, advanced porous structure analysis, and possible energy-efficient fabrication methods, with an optional life cycle assessment (LCA) component.
