Postdoctoral Position in Science, Technology and Society (STS)

The Ethics, Technology and Society (ETS) research group within ETH Zurich’s Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences (D-GESS) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Science, Technology and Society (STS). Led by Prof. Dr. Margarita Boenig-Liptsin, the group conducts qualitative, interpretive research on the interplay between digital technologies and society, drawing on STS, history, philosophy, anthropology, critical theory, and the arts.

The successful candidate will develop an independent research project focused on digital technologies in society—such as computing, data, algorithms, and AI—while contributing to interdisciplinary collaborations, teaching, and public engagement. Candidates should be completing their PhD by January 2026 or have completed their PhD within the last two years.

Key responsibilities and expectations include:

  • Conducting qualitative STS research in the field of digital technologies and society.

  • Publishing in recognized international journals, including co-authored work with group members.

  • Co-developing and co-teaching Bachelor- and Master-level courses in the Science in Perspective program.

  • Contributing to interdisciplinary collaborations with computer scientists, researchers, and students.

  • Engaging in public dialogue on ethical, social, and political dimensions of AI and digital technologies.

  • Supporting the research group’s activities, including workshops, events, and collaborative projects.

  • Participating in grant-writing efforts to secure external funding.

  • Actively engaging in the Swiss and international STS community and fostering relationships within D-GESS and ETH Zurich.

Profile & required qualifications:

  • PhD in STS or a closely related field (completed within the last two years or completion expected by January 2026).

  • Research expertise on digital technologies and society, demonstrated through publications and/or teaching.

  • Strong grounding in STS theories, qualitative methods, and humanities pedagogy.

  • Experience collaborating across disciplines, especially with technical and scientific fields.

  • English language proficiency.

Desirable attributes:

  • Experience with co-productionist, comparative, or cross-national STS approaches.

  • International research experience.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in team-based environments.

  • German, French, or Italian language skills.

Position details & benefits:

  • 100% postdoctoral position, fixed-term for 2 years.
