Professor in Mechanical Engineering: Welding Technology

Sint-Katelijne-Waver, Belgium
Closed (Jan 31, 2026)

KU Leuven invites applications for a full-time Professor in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Welding Technology, to be based at the De Nayer Campus within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The successful candidate will join a leading research and educational environment dedicated to advanced joining, welding engineering, and production technologies.

This role focuses on developing an internationally competitive research programme in resistance welding, ultrasonic welding, and fusion welding, complemented by research into welding-oriented production processes such as wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) and direct energy deposition (DED). The position offers access to an established experimental infrastructure, strong industrial partnerships, and an active PhD community.

Key expectations include:

  • Leading innovative research in welding technology and welding engineering, with outcomes of international scholarly impact
  • Supervising PhD researchers and contributing to high-quality publications
  • Strengthening industrial collaboration and engaging in applied research that drives technological innovation
  • Securing competitive external funding through regional, national, and international programmes
  • Delivering education in Welding Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, including modules accredited by the International Institute of Welding (IIW)
  • Supervising Master’s theses and contributing to KU Leuven’s research-based, student-centred teaching model
  • Maintaining and expanding collaborations with partners such as BWI/BIL, IIW bodies, and industrial stakeholders

The Welding Engineering Master’s programme at KU Leuven De Nayer Campus is internationally recognized and audited by the International Institute of Welding, opening pathways to the qualification of International Welding Engineer (IWE) alongside the MSc credential.

Candidates should hold a PhD in Engineering Science or Engineering Technology with demonstrable research expertise in welding technology. Experience with industrial collaboration, production-oriented research, and/or possession of an IWE diploma or Master in Welding Engineering is a strong asset. Fluency in English is required; Dutch proficiency is expected to be obtained in due time to support full teaching duties.

KU Leuven offers a supportive environment for international academics with optional research start-up funding, integration support for relocating staff, and a structured tenure-track system. Depending on experience, candidates may be appointed as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, or Full Professor.
