Technician in Chemical & Environmental Engineering (Fixed-Term)

The University of Nottingham is seeking a Technician in Chemical & Environmental Engineering (Fixed-Term) to provide high-level specialist technical support across teaching and research laboratories within the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (CEE). This full-time position is central to the operation, safety, and maintenance of highly utilised laboratory spaces and key equipment that underpin both student learning and research output in the department.

Working collaboratively within a skilled technical team, the postholder will support laboratory operations, assist academic colleagues in delivering high-quality laboratory teaching, and ensure compliance with health and safety standards. This role combines hands-on technical work with problem solving, equipment maintenance, and support for developing new laboratory experiments.

Key responsibilities and expectations include:

  • Providing technical support across research and teaching laboratories in Chemical & Environmental Engineering.

  • Maintaining laboratory spaces, infrastructure, and specialised equipment to ensure safe and effective use.

  • Overseeing and supporting laboratory health and safety practices, including manual handling, delivery of gas cylinders, and transportation of chemicals and equipment.

  • Collaborating with staff to design and implement new laboratory experiments and practical teaching activities.

  • Developing and communicating laboratory techniques, ensuring best practice is shared with students and colleagues.

  • Engaging proactively in problem solving and adapting to new challenges within laboratory operations.

About the successful candidate:

  • Experience working in a chemistry or chemical engineering laboratory environment is essential.

  • Ability to learn new techniques, troubleshoot laboratory challenges, and explain theory and practice to others.

  • Strong technical skills and a proactive, flexible approach to work.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and respond effectively to operational needs.

  • Health and safety qualifications are desirable, but not mandatory.

Working environment and benefits:

  • Full-time, fixed-term position until 31 December 2026.

  • 36.25 hours per week, with flexibility in working patterns based on operational requirements.
