The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at the University of Iowa invites applications for an open-rank tenure-track faculty position in the neural and/or physiological mechanisms of speech and/or swallowing, with an anticipated start date in August 2026. The department seeks candidates whose work advances understanding of communication and feeding mechanisms in either pediatric or adult populations, including research related to aging, acute medical conditions, or progressive and non-progressive disorders. Applicants whose research interests align with any physiological or neurological aspects of speech and swallowing are encouraged to apply.
The University of Iowa offers one of the strongest academic environments in communication sciences worldwide, combining a historic legacy of leadership with cutting-edge facilities. In 2025, the department relocated to the new Health Sciences Academic Building, home to advanced laboratories and clinical spaces designed to support translational research and interdisciplinary collaboration. Faculty benefit from access to state-of-the-art resources, including 7T MRI, EEG, videofluoroscopy, endoscopy, electromagnet articulography, stroke and neurodegeneration clinical programs, and specialized swallowing and feeding clinics.
The successful candidate will establish an externally fundable research program, contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching in their specialization, mentor students at multiple academic stages, and engage in professional and departmental service. The position offers opportunities to collaborate across campus with colleagues in neurology, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, rehabilitation medicine, public health, neuroscience, and computer science, alongside institutional initiatives such as the Iowa Neuroscience Institute and iDREAM program.
